Year 6 Amazing Learning at Bristol University

Our Year 6 Class visited Bristol University today to experience what it might be like to attend university - in a packed day they learned about DNA, this morning, and Shakespeare this afternoon.

Kindly arranged by Sarah-Jane Kinley, a Kingfisher school governor and responsible for widening participation at Bristol Uni, the day was hosted by staff and student ambassadors. Enthused by amazing information and fantastic experiments the children came back to school inspired to be the scientists and literary geniuses of the future!

Starting at the fantastic Wills Building we visited the Biomedical Sciences Teaching Laboratories...

We learned just how closely each human is in terms of DNS - no matter what we look like our DNA matches 99.9% with every other human!

We tested kiwi fruit to extract its DNA....

And investigated the results...

We learned that a human DNA strand is 2 metres in length - that's about the same as the height of Olympic athlete Usain Bolt!

After lunch we learned just how cool Shakespeare is..

Studied some Iambic Pentameters like the one below..

Hard to say, perhaps, but the children got stuck into working out sentences made up of 10 syllables!  Having fun whilst learning makes everything seem easier!

Many thanks to the staff and students of Bristol University for their kindness, enthusiasm and time today.  We've come back buzzing and ready to learn!  Let's see what the future holds for our Year 6 children....
