Welsh Bird Of Prey Centre Visit to The Kingfisher School

The children were visited today by The Welsh Bird of Prey Centre.  The 7 birds of prey included a tawny and a Eurasian eagle owl, a kestrel, a lanner falcon, a goshawk, a buzzard and a red tailed kite.  Their handler, Mike, kindly gave the children a very informative talk about the birds' diet, anatomy and calls.  The birds were each safely tethered to their own perch...

Some lucky children were chosen to hold the birds, using a special glove to protect their skin from the birds' talons..

Some of the things the children learned about were that the birds of prey use their talons to catch and kill their prey.  This is why a kingfisher is not a bird of prey as it uses its beak!

Did you know that when you hear an owl's cry of "Twit Twoo" you're actually hearing 2 owls calling to each other. They call in such harmony that it actually sounds like just one bird.

The children will be talking about the event tomorrow and using this as a writing stimulus.

The birds were very beautiful, and well behaved and the children and staff enjoyed the talks.  We would like to thank the Welsh Bird of Prey Centre for their visit to our school today.
